Google is working on a Chrome browser security measure designed to protect devices connected to your home or private network. The feature being developed will monitor the website’s access requests to network devices and ensure they come from secure sources.
Explaining the motivation behind the feature, the Chrome Platform Status page states: “To prevent malicious websites from operating through the user agent’s network location to attack devices and services that reasonably assume to be generally inaccessible from the Internet due to their presence on the user’s local intranet or on the user’s machine. ”
The feature will check whether the permission request titled “Private network access controls browsing requests” comes from a secure source. It will also be observed whether the target device allows private network access. Google is working to help developers test the feature and “prepare for future implementation” by showing alerts after running a series of checks.
The private network access feature is expected to be released for Android and desktop with the release of Chrome 123 or 124.
