Lexar introduced its new portable SSDs named SL500, SL600, SL660 Blaze and ARMOR 700 at CES 2024. All four drives offer the same performance level with speeds of up to 2000 MB/s, but these models differ in some aspects and are produced for different purposes.
The SL500 Ultra Slim is a model designed to be installed on iPhones or flagship Android devices. The SSD with a compact metal enclosure is currently in the prototype stage. This model also comes with a rubber casing and a wrist strap. Lexar says the SL500 offers up to 2,000 MB/s read and 1,800 write transfer speeds in 1 TB, 2 TB and 4TB options. The new driver is useful for devices such as the iPhone 15 Pro that use the ProRes RAW format for videos.
Armor 700 will replace Lexar Armor series drives. As the name suggests, Armor 700 has a rugged design for greater durability. It provides a higher level of protection against dust, liquid and drops while coming with an IP66 rating not seen in other rugged drives.
Likewise, the SSD, which can reach up to 2,000 MB, can be used as an external source to record 4K 60FPS videos from any device. This resolution and refresh rate in RAW format consumes a lot of space and also requires high write speeds. Since iPhones do not have MicroSD expandability, high-performance SSDs can be used for additional storage. On another note, the Lexar SL500 and Armor 700 use Silicon Motion’s controller with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface.
The Professional SL600 is a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 drive option with 256-bit AES encryption and no RGB. In terms of capacity, 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB options are available.
SL660 Blaze is a model with RGB LEDs for gamers. In terms of capacity, 512 GB and 1 TB storage variants are offered. Since many handheld gaming devices do not have MicroSD support, external SSDs may be needed for this and other purposes. Lexar’s new generation portable SSDs will go on sale in the first quarter of 2024.
