Apple has released an important security update to fix a Bluetooth-related vulnerability affecting Magic Keyboard models. The vulnerability allowed an attacker with physical access to the keyboard to intercept Bluetooth traffic.
“An attacker with physical access to accessories can capture the Bluetooth pairing key and monitor Bluetooth traffic,” Apple says in a support document published after rolling out the update on January 9.
Magic Keyboard Firmware Update 2.0.6 is available for the following models:
- Magic Keyboard
- Magic Keyboard (2021)
- Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad
- Touch ID’li Magic Keyboard
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad
Firmware updates for the Magic Keyboard can be automatically installed in the background if the keyboard is actively paired with a device running macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or tvOS. To check your keyboard’s firmware version on Mac, just go to System Settings > Bluetooth and tap the “i” button next to the keyboard.
The Magic Keyboard was first released in 2015, and a numeric keypad was added to the design in 2017. In late 2021, Apple released updated Magic Keyboard models with Touch ID and Lock Key support. Touch ID on the Magic Keyboard performs a variety of tasks, such as unlocking the Mac and verifying sign-in information. Like other Apple products, the Magic Keyboard is expected to have a USB-C connection in the coming period.
