RTX Video Super Resolution (VSR) technology has been available for a while in systems with an RTX graphics card. With this technology, it is possible to apply ML-based image upscaling in video playback and streams. We had heard that Intel was working on its own “Intel Video Super Resolution” technology. Now AMD is bringing a similar technology to systems with a wide range of GPUs.
AMD also briefly mentioned the video upscaling technique along with its hardware during its CES 2024 announcements. The red team will use FSR technologies to improve video quality. Functionality to upscale streaming videos will come with the next Radeon Adrenalin driver update, and a VLC update supporting the technology for offline content will be available in the first quarter.
During the presentation, we did not see a live video or much detail. However, AMD hinted that upscaling a YouTube video from 720p to 1440p could result in a noticeably sharper image.
NVIDIA introduced RTX Video Super Resolution about a year ago, offering in-browser upscaling support for YouTube and streaming services, as well as offline footage in VLC. The good thing about AMD is that they always keep support broad. NVIDIA’s solution only worked on RTX graphics cards. AMD FSR, on the other hand, is compatible with most hardware, including consoles and competitors’ GPUs. We do not know the system requirements yet, we will share them with you as soon as we hear.
As a final addition, the Radeon Adrenalin driver update will also improve AVC, HEVC and AV1 encoding on RDNA 3 GPUs.
