It looks like WhatsApp is planning to introduce its own file sharing system that will work within the app. According to WABetaInfo, this feature will work with the file sharing system available on both Android (Quick Share) and iOS (AirDrop).
The new feature was spotted in the 2.24.2.20 beta and has file sharing feature that works on nearby devices. In order to send and receive files, the Nearby People screen must also be open. If users do not have the phone number of the other person, the devices will not be able to communicate.
To create a sharing request using the new WhatsApp feature, both users will need to open the Nearby Contacts screen and then shake their devices. It is also reported that the file size is limited to 2 GB and the feature is still in the testing phase.
It remains unclear when the feature will be available to all users.
