iOS 17.5 deleted photos

After the iOS 17.5 update offered last week, an error appeared that caused deleted old photos to reappear in the Photos application. Although Apple quickly released an iOS 17.5.1 update to fix the problem, the “database corruption” explanation in the release notes was not enough for many users. In fact, it was noted that the company did little to address concerns about the privacy of its data.

Finally, Apple shared more details about the issue and what’s causing it to 9to5Mac. The company stated that the problem had nothing to do with iCloud Photos and that the company was never able to access the deleted photos. Instead, a corrupt database entry on the affected devices is stated to be the reason for the deleted photos to reappear. In other words, it was stated that the restored deleted images were found locally and never left these devices.

Apple said that in some rare cases, iOS 17.5 accidentally restored files from corrupted data and repopulated the Photos app with deleted images. Apple claimed that the issue affected a small number of users and a small number of photos. To explain the news that some of the restored photos were too old, the company said that in some cases corrupted data may have been copied from one device to another while restoring a local backup, performing a device-to-device transfer, or restoring an iCloud device backup.

The iOS 17.5.1 update did not remove previously deleted photos that reappeared after updating to iOS 17.5. Affected users will therefore need to manually delete these images again. These will be moved to the Recently Deleted album in the Photos app and will remain there for 30 days. Recently deleted photos in this folder can also be instantly deleted by selecting Delete from All Devices.
