Apple has announced that it will soon allow sideloading of apps and will allow third-party app stores on iPhone and iPad in some parts of Europe to comply with the European Union (EU)’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). Apple has also, surprisingly, given permission for cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now.
In a post on the Developer site, Apple says: “Developers will now be able to deliver a single app with the ability to stream all the games offered in their catalog. “Apps will also be able to offer enhanced discovery opportunities for streaming games, mini-apps, mini-games, chatbots, and add-ons available within their apps.”
Apple has previously stated that it will not allow streaming app stores to be available for iPhone or iPad. This was because the company insisted that every game offered from a streaming service must be rated as a standalone application.
Microsoft’s Cloud Gaming service and NVIDIA GeForce Now have overcome this obstacle by offering a web browser. On the other hand, companies are now free to create custom applications for iPhone and iPad and send them to Apple.
Apple also said that apps like Xbox Cloud Gaming and NVIDIA GeForce Now “must maintain the age rating of the highest rated content within the app.” This means both apps will receive a “rated 17+” label.
Let’s see when such services will be available for iOS and iPadOS platforms.
