Microsoft separated its Teams app from its Office products in Europe last year to address regulators’ concerns. Now, Microsoft Teams seems to be implementing this change globally for the Office suite.
According to Reuters, Microsoft will sell its chat and video application Teams separately from its Office product globally. “To provide clarity for our customers, we are expanding the steps we took last year to dedicate M365 and O365 Teams in the European Economic Area and Switzerland to customers worldwide,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Reuters.
This unbundling means Microsoft enterprise customers around the world will be able to purchase Microsoft 365 subscriptions without Teams or will have to purchase a standalone version of Teams.
The news states that as of April 1, customers will have the option to continue with their current arrangements, renew or update their existing licenses, or switch to new existing offers.
Pricing: For new commercial customers, the prices of Office without Teams will vary between $7.75 and $54.75, depending on the product, while the additional price of Teams will be $5.25. Figures will vary by country and currency.
It should be noted that the decision comes after the European Commission launched a formal antitrust investigation into Microsoft’s bundling of Teams software with its Office productivity suite last year.
